Diagnostic laboratories are found in both clinical and public health settings, such as hospitals and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Diagnostic lab directors, particularly at public health institutions, use their understanding of lab capabilities with scientific research experience to find novel targets and illnesses that are already present or emerging. Labs leverage existing resources to develop the necessary experiments to verify new tests and build protocols to incorporate new testing into existing laboratory systems, utilising their technical and human capabilities.
